NOT
JUST RAIN TO DRAIN
The phrase "stormwater = rainwater +
pollution" is definitely true in urban
catchments. Stormwater is often polluted because many
of our activities within the catchment create pollutants.
An urban environment has lots of hard surfaces that
water can't soak into, such as roads, carparks and
buildings. As rainwater flows across these surfaces
and is channelled via the stormwater system to our
local waterways it picks up pollutants such as soil,
leaves, litter, animal droppings, detergents, oil
and chemicals. In rural catchments these pollutants
may be carried by water running over land and in channels
into local waterways. The faster the water, the more
pollutants it will pick up!
